Benvenuto!

scroll139.jpgHello! Welcome to my website and blog.

When used as an Italian idiom, per caso implies a wonderful process by which stuff comes together to create an opportunity that is seemingly by chance.

There are many other words… luck [when preparation meets opportunity]; courage [putting what’s important to you above your fear]; karma, destiny, fate….

I like these concepts because they encourage us to increase our awareness and live in the moment.Sig120

Please enjoy my site… it challenges me to acknowledge my courage and prepare for my luck!

Swallows always come home…

We’ve been waiting with anticipation to see when the swallows would come back to build their mud nests in our apartment eaves. They were in full flury when we moved here last June, filling the open spaces in the courtyards with their swirling patterns… we could squint and dream, and feel the warmth of the sun in an Umbrian piazza, smell fresh baked bread, and sip our coffee.

Saturday when we awoke to the sound of hot air balloons, we found the vision in our “piazza” a cartoonish mix of eight brilliantly colored balloons floating in the background of the darkly-silhouetted swallow flock darting swiftly here and there, beginning their tasks of eating after their long migration and building their nests.

iraq-sidewalk-close1.jpgWanting to learn more about our visiting feathered friends, I started Googling. I found wonderful stories and legends and symbolic tattoos. I had no idea these small pazzi birds can fly 15,000 miles in 30 days to reach their nesting destinations. The legends speak of loyalty, freedom, and coming home. The image of a swallow is a typical tattoo for sailors and soldiers, the embodiment of hope for a safe homecoming or, if harm should fall, a comforting guarantee that the swallows will lift your soul to safety.

We are in the countdown for the safe return of our Alex. He has been in Iraq for a year now. Even though I think about him with a smile many times each day, it’s unimaginable for me to believe it has been that long. I’m sure for him, it seems a lifetime.

I think “life” is what interrupts the naturally or cultivated occurrences that continue to go on, with or without our participation. The good and the bad, living your life to the fullest requires active participation, not just daily routine. We are surrounded this week by the hubbub of spring in full bloom; fantastically much more apparent in a rural community. We are grateful for this phenomena and taking time to enjoy time. It will happen with or without our participation, in the background of our life.
